Does Insurance Cover GLP-1 Drugs Like Ozempic?

Benefits LibraryA Dillingham Benefits resourceFree to share

The coverage question everyone's asking — here's the complicated answer.

GLP-1 medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Zepbound have become some of the most-prescribed drugs in the country. Coverage is complicated and varies wildly by plan.

The Short Answer

It depends on why it's prescribed and what your specific plan covers.

For Type 2 Diabetes: Often Covered

Ozempic and Mounjaro were originally approved for Type 2 diabetes. When prescribed for that indication, most insurance plans — including commercial employer plans and Medicare Part D — cover them, though cost-sharing varies.

For Weight Loss: Much More Restricted

Wegovy and Zepbound are FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Employer health plans are not required to cover weight loss drugs, and many don't. Medicare traditionally excluded obesity drugs, though this is slowly changing.

What Affects Your Coverage

What to Do

  1. Call the member services number on your insurance card and ask specifically about GLP-1 coverage for your diagnosis
  2. Have your doctor submit a prior authorization request with full clinical documentation
  3. If denied, appeal — and ask your doctor to support the appeal with medical necessity documentation
  4. Check manufacturer savings programs (Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly both offer them)

The Landscape is Changing

Coverage for these drugs is expanding rapidly. What wasn't covered last year may be covered now. Always check your current plan documents and call to confirm.
